I've been seeing these commercials with Rob Cochran going on about their new way of selling cars and am intruiged. Has anyone shopped at any of his dealerships lately, or have any idea what their new pitch is? I'm in sales, so I'm eager to know if this is all talk or there really is something new about the way they sell.

Are they offering a new toaster with every purchase now?

Ah, I see. It's a classic marketing pitch. They expect that customers would trust a third party cost estimation service, like edmunds, to tell them what the car should be worth based on a bunch of statistics such as make and model, popularity, safety and resale value.

I personally tend to trust my negotiation skills more than edmunds that partnered not with me but with the dealership.

Maybe he's offering the "Cochgerald" special on hair-cuts for affluent new male clients who don't own mirrors or combs?

My inner (and outer) straight self is offended by this. I don't own a comb. :P

I want to at least see a price on the car when I'm looking--otherwise, I won't even talk to them. Something should cost what it costs, and not fluctuate depending on how much they think I'm willing/able to pay.

I hate the loaded "how much are you looking to pay" question. Five bucks--how's that sound, dealerguy?

Can you let a thread at least get to the second page before you kill it?

maybe im stupid today - i dont follow. isnt edmunds and/or kelly great tools? dont they provide a BASIS for establishing the cost of a used vehicle?

im using it to help my parents, in fact. they are in the market for a car (and i need a sedative for this task).

Sure they are great. They establish an upper price point for a car instead of a basis. In other words, there is no way a car should cost more than what they say it should. Most of the time you would see cars being sold below BB/edmunds value, however.

Using these tools to do your own research before buying/selling is smart. Trusting your dealer to do it for you is not, imho. With that being said, it's still probably a better alternative to walking into a dealership and buying a car at face MSRP value.
