Hello everyone,

My husband and I are moving from NYC to Pittsburgh, because he recently got a new job in downtown of Pittsburgh. We are looking for rent a 2-bedroom apartment for max $1400 in Shadyside or Sq hills, but we could not find any modern apartment in this price so we should think about other neighborhoods. Which neighborhoods do you advice to us?
Safety, near the public transportation (extremely 20 minutes to downtown), walkable and near to the shops and supermarkets are the points that are important for us.
Thank you in advance!

You might want to look at something like the Heinz Lofts on the North Side.

They start at about $1400 for a 2 br, can certainly walk to town from there, its walkable to the grocers in strip and to public transport.

Its an old building, but the apartments are newly constructed.

I'll echo the recommendation for the Heinz Lofts and would also add the lofts across the river in the Strip District for your consideration. You may want to look into the Cork Factory, Lot 24, Strip District Lofts, Cigar Factory Lofts, Brake Factory Lofts, or the 31st Street Lofts. From here your husband could walk to work in 15-20 minutes or bike in 5-10 minutes. You'd be in the middle of a growing neighborhood that has markets, restaurants, nightlife, shopping, etc.

I'd look at Lawrenceville. A1, Wylie, botero, bill Barron all have nice place there. Plus many more.

You might have to compromise on what you mean by "modern" with regard to apartments. Many places in the trendier, convenient neighborhoods are modest apartments in converted houses or older apartment buildings. If you're looking for something less than 10 years old with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, you're going to have your work cut out for you.

The Gateway at Summerset in Squirrel Hill South immediately comes to mind, but it seems like their cheapest available 2-BR units START at $1,750/month.

While Pittsburgh may be a cheap city to buy a house in, it's extremely expensive to RENT within.

The most modern apartments are in the newly converted office buildings of downtown itself. These are probably over $1400 at 2BR though, not sure. Maybe close though. Tougher might be that every unit they put up is rented immediately; they typically have waiting lists. More buildings are being converted as we speak.

It's not very walkable to a supermarket but very convenient to work, restaurants/bars and some shops.

The Strip District suggestions or Heinz Lofts as mentioned above are also good options if you can find a unit in your price range.

Otherwise, you're likely going to have to compromise on type of modern unit, or on the rent. Coming from NYC, unless you're looking for drastic change, I doubt you want to compromise on location. For many years, the majority of new units being built were in the suburbs. Right now, the building boom is within the skyscraper blocks of downtown.

Somewhere like Shadyside and Squirrel Hill, while often people's favorite residential city neighborhoods, well, there's a lack of supply for rentals which keeps the price up even for stuff that hasn't been renovated in a while.

Make sure you're checking out Craigslist and such because some of those converted houses DO get renovated at times and might have modern appointments inside, and many of them won't be rented by brokers or management companies. I'd say it's more likely for those to be renovated than larger high-rise buildings in Shadyside or Squirrel Hill.

Max $1400 budget is going up be your biggest problem in finding what you're looking for in the city, especially in the nicer neighborhoods.
If you could do more like $1600-1800 then your options open up significantly

While the strip is great by day I disagree that it has much to offer at night & remains a very sketchy area to walk around then as well.
If that's important to the op of course

I'm honestly a little surprised since you're moving from NYC your budget is so low, and your expectations are so high. $1,400 per month isn't an unheard of rent for New York, but at that price there, you're not getting granite countertops and a quick commute into Midtown.

Something to keep in mind regarding Shadyside, and to a lesser extent Squirrel Hill, is those are popular neighborhoods for students to rent in. As a result, like most student-dominated areas, there are a lot of ratty apartments which are overpriced.

Maybe you could tell us a bit more about yourself and what you're looking for in particular.
