We grew up here and miss the city and the area and we always managed well on one salary too, so for us, being as frugal as we are already, we will be fine, but thanks for your concern nevertheless.

We have something else in common! We are frugalistas, too! We live in a high cost of living area now, and do very well on 40K a year (which is what we pay ourselves from our business -- the business earns more)

Population loss...whether from outmigration or death rates, really hurts population-dependent sectors like housing, retail, and entertainment/leisure. The original poster works in gambling/lodging, so finding work in that sector could be tough for him/her.
I've seen this comment before on this forum -- that there are only jobs in medicine, research, and higher education. There are many IT/computing jobs open in Pittsburgh that are not in higher education or research. (I don't know about other sectors)

I don't buy clothing in resale shops -- I'm a big woman and there is very little size wise there... but I do shop for china and glass (old patterns) and furniture. Salvation Army had the coolest 50's bureau a month ago we picked it up for 95 bucks -- A blonde Broyhill with dovetailed drawers and the original drawer pulls....

And my clothing needs are simple -- a pocket tee and jeans. It's my janitorial uniform. I swear, when I retire, it's BONFIRE day! I'm burning those ugly pocket tees -- but I need the pocket for my phone.... with my ear protection in and my vacuum going the phone has to be as close to my ear as possible.

I am pretty much laid back myself too Tallysmom...Jeans and a sweater with boots usually in the winter and shorts in the summer...is pretty much me too, I just love finding things like suede skirts that someone paid an ridicuols amount of money for, for like ten bucks and wearing them when i do get dressed up from time to time. The Salvation Army does get alot of really nice old vintage and sometimes very good furninture as does the DVAs in Va where we currently reside. It is an Veteran Resale Store ( DVAs) and there are also some Childrens of the Kings Daughters stores as well, that have great childrens clothes, i mix and match them all up, I will sometimes go to a mall, but only during sales and then i use the coupons, just too cheap! LOL! I am very much amazed that you can actually live in Oakland CA on 40 grand, I am impressed actually!

I currently live in Las Vegas, and want to move to Pitts. area because of the price of housing and climate. But, my house is still worth what I paid for 2 years ago. I hope to sell it by next summer and live in anpt., until i can find a job in Pitt.

I work 2 jobs, both in the casino/hotel industry. One as banquet porter and the other a Race/sportbook writer (mutual clerk at horse racetracks). the problem is I get paid to good $13.85 an hour as a banquet porter and $8.60 an hour in the racebook plus tips. I do not think that I could find a job that pays that high for those jobs in the Pitt. area.

My question is, does anyone know what the pay at "the Meadows" race track is? I tried their website but not hiring, but sometimes they do not list anything, so I thought maybe somebody locally knows. Also, any good hotels that have a conference center that is reputable. I work for a high class hotel in las Vegas so I have the experience as a banquet porter, plus I have the experience also a catering cordinator, but it has been a while.

I was hoping for some local "feel" and see what you guys might now.

Thanks in advance for the asssistance.
It's hard to get into a casino in Pittsburgh, Howerver, with your experience you have a good shot. I moved here to Las Vegas 3 months ago, purchased a condo, and too have two jobs and can't make ends meet.

I desperetley want to move back to Pittsburgh. If you wish we can talk and maybe help each other.

There is a far better job market in Pittsburgh and housing is the same as here. I love Pittsburgh and never should have left.

You can find a job quickly in Pittsburgh in hospitality. Get back to me so we can talk.
