It was on the news. Penndot is testing it as a snow and ice removal in Butler. Aside from being eco friendly, it actually works for days after. The snow and ice doesn't refreeze like it does when salt is used. This all makes me wonder why it's 2014 and they're only now figuring out a better way. I did a google and cities throughout North America are trying beet juice. I'm betting farmers will be planting beets this year.

I heard about the beet juice a few years ago I think. Made me think we've already been getting screwed for years with cars rusting out from backwards PennDOT (and locals) still using salt. Heh.

It's hard to get set in their ways governments to change too much. The salt procurement is easy. Procurement (and perhaps spreading equipment) for the beet juice takes a little bit more effort I suspect.

In my search for an answer to that very good question, I discovered that deer are attracted to beets. Since this beet juice mixture being spread on the roads is mixed with brine, I anticipate this will result in destruction of wildlife. I guess it's not so eco friendly after all. I wonder why they're not using straight beet juice.

I really like they are experimenting with something other than salt. They use cinders on our roads. I live on a very steep curvy road and have found it works well but it is not without its controversy.

They can use the same equipment they use for spreading brine.

I've heard beet juice has good results, but is slightly more expensive than salt, and sometimes has a strong odor. I've also heard it could attract deer. So in that way it poses a danger to local critters. OTOH salt hurts local wildlife a lot more than beet juice does, IMO, especially if it gets into a local stream or pond.

They are mixing the beet juice with brine. The salt problem isn't eliminated. And the deer attracted to the beet juice will be drinking salt too. I guess they need some salt for the winter. I just wonder how much is too much though.

Salt is cheap, that's why it's used.
