London cabbies are kind of amazing in all they know about the city, though.

Interesting that other cities have pushed back against Uber and Lyft. I thought it was just a typical Pennsylvania/Pittsburgh thing.

I say, bring on the competition.

Has anyone used the argument that the competition will cause Yellow Cab drivers to lose their job? Usually that gets trotted out in these situations i.e about the PA state store monopoly.

Sydney (Aus) has started fining Uber drivers $2.5K today. It's certainly not a Pittsburgh thing. (I suspect very few of things on here attributed to being Pittsburgh 'things' are, if fact, but that's another thread!)

Some cab drivers are looking to form a national union to fight Uber and Lyft.

Nothing about Pittsburgh's hacks, however.

I don't know how it's shaking down in other cities, but here in Chicago I'm finding that many of my Uber drivers are former cab drivers who are elated to get out from underneath the fleet owners who charge roughly $125-$150 to lease a cab per 12-hour shift. That can easily be half their fare take during a shift, and that's if they hustle the full 12 hours. And that doesn't count gas either that the cabbies have to pay out of their own pocket. Factor in all their costs and cabbies who don't own their own cab are lucky to be making 5 bucks an hour.

Competition fuels innovation.

Sounds good to me. If their service is as good as Uber, I'll potentially use it.
