Pittsburgh has always taken this time of year pretty seriously, every one with a deep fryer is peddling fish sandwiches particularly during lent which begins on 5 March.

When I lived on the South Side, I always like the fish served at the Serbian Club as well as at Holy Angels in Hays if I was energetic enough to drive.

Here's a list of just the Catholic fish frys scheduled this year, its a very incomplete list as it doesn't include the many non-Catholic churches and non-religious outfits that organize these affairs.

I love a good fried fish sandwich, but I have to say the no red meat thing for Catholics is pretty hilarious. It is like, I am giving up red meat on Fridays for Lent. It is pretty tough. I eat a GIGANTIC fried fish sandwich. Poor me. ha, ha, ha

I'm not Catholic, but if I were, I'd say that remark is pretty insensitive, if not offensive.

Oh come on! The zillion Catholics I know would find it hilarious as well. No one gives up anything if they are eating some huge fried fish sandwich. It is great fun and to be enjoyed. Pittsburgh has some good fried fish. We can hang in that department. Head down to Nied's in Upper Lawrenceville. They are supposed to be pretty good. It is a clean bar, that I know first hand.

Up in Mt Wash. there are a few churches with little grannies who make them just right. I could go for one w/slaw and fries.

I live a few blocks away from Neid's and they have some amazing fish sandwiches.

Every religion has its idiosyncrasies (yours included, lest you forget). That said, I do get a chuckle out of the fact that the Church reclassified beaver as fish for their fur-trapping brethren over in French Canada.

I know that one of the Catholic Churches downtown (Epiphany, I think it was) hosts weekly fish fries almost year-round, but I'm guessing it's among the lesser-renowned as a result.

Too bad Philly doesn't have a fish fry circuit, though it isn't the fish I miss so much as the haluski lol.

I'm Catholic and frequently offended by h_curtis, but I don't find this offensive or very insensitive.

The old rules (no meat on any Friday, fasting all Lent) were so much stricter that older Catholics make the same kinds of remarks.

It's quite funny actually and not offensive.
Every year during Lent Catholics give up something as a sacrifice, I tell my very stout Mother that I am giving up "Fish" for Lent every year. She laughs at me because I hate Fish and she knows it.
We Catholics do have a sense of humor you know, it is allowed.
