I never mind people stocking up before a storm. While I normally buy basics in bulk, and always have plenty of non-perishables on-hand, I always push my "normal" grocery shopping forward and buy whatever fresh foods I might need in the coming week. Sure, it isn't really necessary, but I have the time to spare. I'd rather be a dummy waiting in line at the grocery store than a dummy in a ditch because I ran out to buy some milk.

As for the power going out, the cold weather can be your friend in terms of perishables.

i think people assume schools will be closed, and that might be part of the pre-storm rush. also, people need this stuff, and if you think you'll be snowed in, chances are the pre-storm period will be your only chance for a day or two. i think it actually makes sense.

No, they really don't. But when you do apply some simple preparation for disasters by having things such as rice, lentils, honey, corn starch, etc. stored people will go, "LOL LOOK AT THIS DOOMSDAY PREPPER OVER HERE".

Instead of the grocery store, I'll be running to the building supply stores to get any materials we need for the kitchen. I'm not letting a snowstorm slow us down now that we're gaining momentum on this renovation.

My biggest concern is getting to / from work. I don't have the luxury of working in a place that closes when we get snow. Ugh.

I'm willing to make it easier on you by staying inside and sleeping so as to help keep traffic down.
