Strikingly lacking from this thread is the actual moves and/or signings that the Pirates should have made this offseason to render them "competative"...which player changed teams that the Pirates missed out on?

Doug Fister. I refuse to believe the Bucs couldn't put together a package competitive to what the Nats offered. Instead we got Volquez.

There really weren't any FA 1b options worth the cost IMO, despite what some people who were pro-Loney. Although I would've taken a risk on Ike Davis if the Mets wanted to be reasonable. If McGuiness keeps up what he's doing, he could end up being the LH 1b platoon instead of Lambo.

I think there are 28 other teams in baseball whose fans are saying that exact same thing. There was pretty much industry-wide surprise when that deal went down for such a seemingly underwhelming return to the Tigers. The truth is we never know what actually happens in trade negotiations, but I truly believe we can say with a fair amount of certainty that this wasn't a case of Dombrowski actively shopping Fister around and Neal just not bothering to match the Nats "package."

I could be way off, but I expect Volquez to be a solid back of the rotation starter. The man had a xFIP just a shade over four last year, and he could easily have an ERA under that this year due to improved fielding behind him, Russell Martin and Chris Stewart's pitch framing and blocking skills, and increased emphasis on throwing his two-seamer for strikes.

Josh Johnson would've been the best free agent pitching pick-up (including Burnett) for the Bucs, but unfortunately he wanted to play on the West Coast.

Agreed on the first base analyses. There just weren't that many great options, and they apparently made a strong run at Loney, who likely had no intentions of leaving Tampa.
