What's soul crushing about one of the oldest municipal parks in the country? It's a little run-down, especially the West Park area but it's a huge park to be situated right in a downtown area.

Oh right, there's an actual park there. I always think of that horrible mall/project/parking garage complex when I hear "Allegheny Commons."

That is "Allegheny Center", not Commons.

Not soul-crushing!

Castleman Street is one of my favorite streets in Shadyside (Pittsburgh 15232). Look how close the houses are to each other: https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-...ed=0CCgQxB0wAA

Same with Aylesboro Avenue in Squirrel Hill (Pittsburgh 15217): https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-...ed=0CCgQxB0wAA

Here's Elgin Street in Highland Park (Pittsburgh 15206) https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-...ed=0CCgQxB0wAA

Houses in the Murdoch Farms area of Squirrel Hill may (or may not) have somewhat larger front lawns, but side-to-side, the houses are still quite close to each other. https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-...ed=0CCgQxB0wAA
Actually, most of those lots have fairly decently sized side yards, especially in the first picture. The minimum side yard in my current city is 5'; I think most of these homes have that much.

Sure, "decent" by our standards, but certainly not the half acre that was asked about. For example, 5800 elgin is 49' x 104', which is about 12% of an acre. Half an acre is really a lot of land: almost no individual home lots in the city are this big.

Hey, it's not my fault everything on the Northside has to have "Allegheny" in the title. It gets confusing.

Here's one down the street: 5540 Elgin . The lot is 130' x 150' which is still a bit under half an acre. Sure, there are some mansions with bigger lots, especially on streets like N Highland north of Stanton, Beechwood between Lyndhurst and Hastings, etc, but these really are the exception and cost BIG bucks.

Well, no, a half acre is unrealistic for almost any large city, I would think.

Hmm here's an interesting one over half an acre that sold at a very reasonable price recently. So I guess they are out there, but rare to be sure.
