IMO, Il Tavola is a red sauce joint done mediocre--certainly much better than Del's however, along with the horrifically overrated LoBello's.

I do like Lidia's and Piccolo Forno.

The best Italian food in the city is at my house! But sadly, that is not available to most.
I have not tried many Italian places in Pittsburgh, mostly because I am not a huge fan of that type of food. I am from the north which is not so tomato-based cuisine. I do love the way Americans put their own twist on things, though, and I guess early immigrants were mostly from the south.
I do like Piccolo Forno although it is impossible to get a table there and I am usually too hungry to wait an hour.

I disagree. The food is just Ok. As far as I'm concerned, it's overrated.

Has anyone tried Lucca in Oakland? I'm supposed to have dinner there soon and I hear it's good.

We like Olives and Peppers in Gibsonia, on Rt 8. Nothing that terribly fancy, but what to they make is usually pretty tasty.

Always walked by it, never ate there because it was so expensive. I've heard good things though.

Grazie to everybody for their responses, I will definitely try out some of the suggestions.

On a tangent I was very disappointed in Girasole, it was expensive and their food was very bland. I am excited to find a place that I can frequent that can make pasta better than I can

Had lunch a couple of times as my office is very close. Been good for lunch bit not thoroughly exercised the menu, so can't definitively give you an opinion. Let us know what you think.

My personal favorites are Woody's Little Italy in Versailles (at the north end of the Boston Bridge), Ciccanti's on Route 51 in Jefferson Hills, Pasta Too on Route 88 in Bethel Park, and (if you don't mind the drive for each) Lenzi's in Monongahela, Rego's in Charleroi, and La Eda's in Monessen. One that I would personally not recommend is Pizzazz in Peters Twp.

Cenacolo in Irwin is probably the best italian meal I've ever had. They own Fede pasta which supplies handmade pasta to a lot of Pittsburgh restaurants. I see the truck downtown all the time. Very unique place and the food is always amazing.
