As a continuation of another thread, here's a question or two:

Was there any point in time in which Jews made up the majority (50% or more) of the total population of Squirrel Hill? These days, are there any streets or blocks which still have a Jewish majority?

This doesn't answer your questions, but it may interest you: https://www.brandeis.edu/ssri/pdfs/c...hCommStudy.pdf

This may as well:

Squirrel Hill, while less than it used to, remains the hub of Jewish pouplation and institutions, particularly for the most active and religiously observant.

A visit to various Jewish institutions along Murray Avenue reveals a mix of impressions.

At Shaare Torah Congregation, an Orthodox synagogue, Rabbi Daniel Wasserman sees people with a strong interest in religious activities but who are reluctant to commit to membership.

“Which is a problem, because that is a real measurement of the future,” he said. “Some say we have to find other ways to engage people. That’s true. But I believe the ultimate measure is synagogue membership.

“On the one hand, we’ve got to pay the bills,” he added. “On the other hand, that’s not what it’s all about.” One way to strike that balance, he said, is to invite people to “kiddush,” a meal held on Shabbat. Even people intimidated by an Orthodox service “can enjoy a cookie together,” he said.

At Murray Avenue Kosher, observant Jews from both the neighborhood and surrounding suburbs come to shop because the variety of items is greater than can be found even in supermarkets that might offer kosher meat.

Deli manager AJay Herskowitz said that Squirrel Hill’s Jewish population is still significant. “I'm not going to say it’s as big as it used to be, by a longshot,” he said. “But there are some people who we see here every day.” And “when it comes to Passover, you won’t be able to walk in the door” with the customer demand.
