Century III Mall and Century Square were built on slag heaps more than 30 years ago, and there hasn't been any subsidence or anything out that way in all those years. And I'll bet that site wasn't remediated as thoroughly as Summerset was.

I think people have ideas that slag is contaminated.

but if there WERE health hazards there, they would become evident a few decades after the fact, right? wasnt summerset built in the early 1990s? so its been 20 years or so.

i would think there shouldnt be a problem unless it was disturbed, or in contact with moving water. in this thread, its been said few have basements. but then, you still need the pad, and early grading/leveling could disturb settled toxins.

but someone also said there is leakage into basements.

its quiet back there...aaaaahhhh. that is nice. but overall, it wouldnt be my cup of tea.

They put 30 inches of new dirt on top of the slag. They don't go below that. Some of them (I've been in a couple that were under construction) have crawl space or partial basements that are still in this added layer of dirt.

Summerset didn't go in until around 2000-2001.

You couldn't pay me to live there. I grew up in Swisshelm Park, which is just up the road from Summerset At Frick. It was a huge slag dump area, and as kids we would go there to play, even though we were not aloud. : )

Getting to my point...there have been way too many people diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease ( my Grandfather being one of them), as well as MS in the small area I grew up in. I have no doubt it can be attributed to all of the slag and chemicals that were dumped there for many years. I have spoke with doctors who also agree with me. To know of at least 5 people in a 15 block radius that have a disease like Lou Gehrigs is off the charts. I would stay away, remediation or not. Then, to think of the money they are charging for these homes, and many people have no idea what they are living on, and what used to be there. No thanks. Just my two cents.

My husband is also environmental engineer and he said the exact same thing. I was kind of pissed because I liked the set up.

Do you pay extra for views of the parkway?

You pay extra for being the only large-scale development of newly built housing in Squirrel Hill. If you want to live close-in and still have the sorts of things you'd get in a new suburban developments (garages, lots of bathrooms, big closets, new everything), you don't have another choice unless you have enough money to tear-down a $200,000 house and build a new one.
