I'm from Brazil. I want to study at an american college, and I'm interested to know about Pittsbugh, Pennsylvania. Is there a good place to study and live? Is it safe? What's living there like?

Thanks!

It's safer than many areas of Brazil. With the exception of a few neighborhoods, Pittsburgh is safe.

What's it like living here is a very open ended question. I'll answer it from a Brazilian weather perspective: You will need winter clothes! I have a friend who is from Brazil. She had never seen snow. She arrived in the middle of winter and didn't have winter clothes. I gave her a pair of my snow boots and a winter coat to hold her over until she went shopping. Since you're arriving before winter, you can wait to buy your winter clothes here. Just make sure you include that in your budget.

I've lived here in Pittsburgh my entire life, and studied as a youth at a great American high school, Langley, here.

I always thought it was a good place to live, and not terribly unsafe.

I've been to Rio, Salvador, Curtitiba, Iguaçu and small towns in between.

Pittsburgh is much safer than Rio and Salvador but likely more dangerous than Curtitiba.

It is a nice city, but it is a city.

I doubt it, even though I've never been to Curtitiba. Whatever you mean by "it is a city" applies even more to Curtitiba than to Pittsburgh. It's bigger. And the murder rate in Brazil is much higher than the U.S. (21.8/hundred thousand vs. 4.8 for the U.S.). The state in which Curtitiba is located appears to be above the national average for Brazil.

List of Brazilian states by murder rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pittsburgh is above the national average of the U.S. but below the national average in Brazil on 11 of the past 12 years.

Pittsburgh sure doesn't have the kidnapping and carjacking rates of Brazil. We don't have civil unrest either.
