I can't agree with this at all, at least not in manhattan. not only are bars open til 4 am, there are the late night "convenience stores" open all over the place. I've also gotten fresh bagels at 1 am and there are still a fair amount of people out.

I was in Manhattan. I wasn't looking for a bar or a convenience store. What I wanted was a reasonably decent meal at 11 PM on the Upper West Side. I ended up in a supremely crappy diner on the Upper East Side. And I used to eat at diners all the time when I lived in NY. This one was worse than Ritter's.

Yes, Manhattan can be considered "24 hours" because the bars are open til 4. Which means that convenience stores and some restaurants may stay open. But as far as much else, it's mostly closed. And there are a lot of drunks out.

What we need are some 24-hour Korean barbecues like on W. 32nd!

I've never had any issues eating in ny at 11 pm, 3 am, or even 5 am. one my first experiences as an adult in manhattan was going out for dinner at 11 pm and seeing so many other people eating dinner at 11 pm! the place was packed. I've had a few late night meals here

After the decision to transform the Liberty Avenue corridor into the "cultural district" was made, the days of a 24/7 downtown were numbered.

In Chicago, the stores on the Magnificent Mile close between 8 and 10 PM.

The Mag Mile is for tourists and old, rich people who live in the Near North. Bars in Chicago can stay open until 4AM (5AM on Saturdays), and there are plenty of restaurants that stay open late to cater to those crowds.

The Red and Blue lines run 24/7 and there are late night bus routes as well.

Why has a thread discussing the impending transition of 2/3 of the Macy's building into upscale apartments devolved into a pi$$ing contest over whether or not Pittsburgh is a "real" city based upon how little here is open 24/7?
