"The problems that created economic devastation in the Rust Belt and other places didn't happen overnight and won't be solved overnight," says Peduto. "And don't be afraid to fail, try new ideas that create a new identity for you and promote the things you already have. Don't try to copy places you are not. Those are the keys to creating a place people want to stay."

Nice mention of Pittsburgh from the Sydney Morning Herald:

Best of the rest: America's less-visited cities

If you plan to retire to Sydney, you will need a lot of money. I couldn't believe how expensive it was there.

Gortonator, I didn't realize you were actually an Aussie--I thought you just lived there for a time.

I hope you're rich - Sydney is expensive - and the Aussie dollar exchange rate crashes. Like comedy, it's all in the timing ...

I think it's ok to incorporate good ideas from other places. You just have to know what would work and what won't.

Most liveable city: Copenhagen - Monocle Film / Affairs

It's nowhere near as expensive when the $US exchange rate is around it's historical norms of about 70-75 cents for 1 Aussie dollar, but with the weak US economy and a China-driven mining boom, it's been close or over parity for at least 5 years. That makes it feel a it more expensive to visit.

It still ain't cheap when you earn Aussie dollars, but it's not that scary. Except real estate - but luckily we bought ours quite a few years ago before the real madness started. Sydney real estate makes some of Pittsburgh's seem like it's virtually free ....

I felt like a kid in a candy store when I was house hunting here. Nothing in SF or anywhere I would have wanted to live in the Bay Area was much under $500k. And that would have gotten me a small house that needed work in an iffy neighborhood.
