not really a Pittsburgh pump piece, but a nice short little read. I agree that pittsburgh hipsters are not quite the same as brooklyn or portland type hipsters ( and actually those two can be very different as well). What I feel is absolutely true, is that there is alteration of pittsburgh youth mindset, and a sense that maybe we do have it pretty good here. Time will tell.

Thanks for the article. This pretty much nails it. I have long contended what this article is trying to portray.
After a while, there seems to be a bit of fakiness to this whole hipster scene. It was the same in Haight-Ashbury in 67.' Early on there was a core of artists and musicians who were doing something different. They were generally talented and had something to offer. Youth from across the country got wind of the "free love" scene in San Francisco and by the end of 67', there was more crime, more drug overdoses, bad trips, etc. Some may think that San Francisco in 67' is a bad analogy to modern day Portland. I am just showing how what can happen. Being a "hippie" in 67' or being a "hipster" in 2014 can become a cliche. People act and dress how they think a hippie or hipster is supposed to act rather than it just being a natural extension of their personality. Of course, popular culture plays a role in this to, but that is a whole other thread. Will Pittsburgh become like this? Who knows. I will say that Pittsburgh has always been a city of quirks. It always has been a little bit different in a lot of ways. Sure, you can say that about a lot of places, but Pittsburgh epitomizes it as the article notes. The fact that the city is authentic, gritty and artsy, combined with a city with several universities and all of the other attributes, makes for one interesting place.
