I just returned from visiting Pittsburgh from the D.C. area and was very impressed with the new riverfront park and trail near the Southside Works, next to the REI. I assume the REI opened at that location to cater to cyclists, as I saw them going in and out of the store. Point State Park is amazing, too.

SS Works has many cyclists because it's near the Hot Metal Bridge, a popular route for getting between the South Side and Oakland/beyond, and to a lesser extent because it's right next to the trail and REI which does bike sales and maintenance.

North Oakland may be extremely dense, but it's a different kind of density: highrises with lots of lawn area available for trees and shrubs. The density in the SS Flats has buildings cheek to jowl and little room for lawns and trees.

I also went to Oakland during my visit, and I personally find E. Carson and Southside Works a better place for walking and more aesthetically pleasing. Maybe I just personally prefer a low-density grid-like urban environment, over the towering structures in Oakland. However, historic buildings like the Carnegie Library are impressive.
