Hey Everyone,

My family is planning on moving to Pittsburgh next summer from Idaho and I was wondering as homeowner if I am allowed to do full renovations to a house. In Idaho I am allowed to do my own mechanical, electrical, plumbing, building work with a city permit. Are you allowed to do that in Pittsburgh? I was having a hard time finding a type of homeowner's building permit section on the city website. This would determine what kind of house we would be looking for in the region. Thanks for your help!

If you are in the city limits you can do all your own work except electrical. Allegheny county handles the plumbing inspections, you can do all your own work as long as it is a single family owner occupied building. Pittsburgh city has their own electrical inspectors and it requires the person doing the work to be a registered electrician but outside the city limits it is controlled by the state, each municipality picks their own electrical inspector from a group of independent state certified inspectors. Outside the city limits you can do your own electrical work. Electrical inspections run about 100 dollars for a rough and final inspection.
