If I_Like_Spam meant to say the immigrant dynamic doesn't apply in PGH, then I apologize for the misinterpretation and huffy response. As for the idea that rideshare services won't draw drivers away from cab fleets there like it has here... that may or may not be, but more importantly what it does is side-step the barriers to entry that heretofore had artificially kept the supply of drivers-for-hire extremely low. People who want to make a buck driving others around don't have to go through Yellow Cab to do it any more.

if uber and lyft keep cutting rates then most good drivers will quit and whats left will be the crappy ex cab drivers out there. I know that PGH lyft charges way less than here in dc, but given the roads there are awful I don't know how folks can make money.

There is a massive cost of living difference, so comparing Pittsburgh to DC would have to be done with that in mind. It doesn't work the way you are implying.

Huh... I'm into the idea if they can give the business to actual corner stores. I doubt that's what's happening here and that they'll be taking business from existing stores.

Maybe in the future, Uber might stock their own sundries, popular food items, beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets to cut out the corner store middleman.

But it costs a lot of money to compete with Rite Aid and 7-11, I just don't see that happening.

It would seem more efficient just to make arrangements with well-positioned chains of corner stores that will cover the service area.

Based in the set sizes and prices of their inventory, I assume Uber is warehousing the items somewhere within the delivery area. It wouldn't be very efficient to make drivers physically drive to the corner store, find street parking, hope items are in stock, wait in line, etc.

Great news, I'm coming to visit in Sept. Can it [Uber] be used at the airport too, or is it blocked there?
