Can anyone tell me the perception of Allegheny Health System within the community? I know that UPMC seems to control the market in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, but how close or distant is AHS in terms of market share? Looks like the system might still currently be in the red, but is making progress.

Reputation of providers? Facilities? What is the patient population like? Payor mix?

Appreciate the responses. Thanks!

I can't give you the detailed stats you seek, but I wanted to let you know that I love AHS.

Most of my doctors jumped the UPMC ship and went there years ago. Since it's very common for doctors to hop between the two healthcare systems, their providers are equally competent. Anyone who tells you differently is biased. Some of UPMCs best doctors are at AHS. At AHS I have PCPs who teaches medicine. One of the major reasons they went to AHS is because UPMC wouldn't allow them to teach and practice. Plus, the contracts are less oppressive in other ways. UPMC docs don't have much wiggle room in what they're permitted to do.

The facilities are comparable to UPMC. After all, UPMC simply bought most community hospitals to create UPMC.

Thank you Hopes- that is exactly the kind of feedback I was seeking. I think I may have overcomplicated my question in the OP....

Alleghany Health System has a long history dating back to 1998 and the bankruptcy of AHERF, which had been the corporate holding company for Allegheny Hospital, and its network of hospitals that included several in Philly. Allegheny Hospital had been one of the largest and most prestitious hospitals in Pittsburgh until they were run into bankruptcy and acquired by West Penn Hospital. West Penn was not in the financial postion to undertake this acquisition and the entire system ended up being bailed out by Highmark. The network of hospitals has never financially recovered from the bankruptcy and the subsequent acquisition. West Penn Hospital has closed units over the past decade as the have struggled to remain competitive.

The network is making a financial turnaround and has narrowed its net loss to $1.8 million in the April-June quarter, compared with a net loss of $47.9 million a year earlier.

Physicians have switched back and forth between UPMC and Allegheny Health Network looking for the best situation. There are still many good doctors at Allegheny and Highmark has deep pockets and will continue to keep them financially viable.

It is difficult to compare market share since UPMC stretches to Erie and Altoona, but UPMC is considerably larger in any comparison.

How does UMPC and AHS handle Medicare patients?

Where I live, it feels like there might be rationing going on as it takes months to get an appointment while doing even less for AHC patients.

What's AHC? Is that the name for Medicare in California?

I don't believe either health system is rationing treatment to Medicare patients.
