Pedestrians hit at 1,000 Pittsburgh intersections in past nine years - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Something needs to be done. Drivers need to slow down. Pedestrians need to look around. Eye contact should be made between driver and walker. Then there should be physical changes also.

regarding eye contact, this is why i'm pretty opposed to tinted windows. it is impossible to see the driver when you are walking across an intersection.

It's always amused me that there are crossing signals at intersections like Woodruff and Saw Mill Run, where a pedestrian would have to have a death wish to even be there, but then the only signal at many heavily walked intersections in the Southside or Squirrel Hill or Lawrenceville is the green traffic light.

I read the headline and immediately thought Tony Stewart was coming to town.

The map is great. It shows that I've been worried about the right corners and the right thing (e.g. a driver turning without paying attention). You see a few accidents in the middle of the street caused by pedestrians crossing in the wrong place and a whole bunch at the corners caused by drivers. In fact, I think some of the jaywalking is pedestrians making a reasonable guess that the corner is more dangerous than the middle of the block because you can see all the cars coming in the middle of the block.

One of the first things one learns as a small child is to learn how to/pay attention crossing the street. Never assume a driver will stop, slow down, or see you. Also goes for bicycling and riding a motorcycle.

That's one person hit every 3.33 days. It would take 2,807 years before every Pittsburgher was hit.

In NYC, there were 1,163 pedestrian accidents in December 2013 alone. ONE MONTH. (Pittsburgh is 109 per year)

Even though NYC has 8.3 million people, it would only take 521 years before every NYC resident was hit.

And NYC is in the middle of a big push to solve their problem. However, I think it will always be worse since so many more people commute by transit or on foot. The average New Yorker will have more opportunities to get hit by a car than the average Pittsburgh resident.

Plus, because so many of their drivers in NYC are driving taxis.

Just like I've been saying for years: it is dangerous to walk as a pedestrian downtown and these stats prove just that. Drivers are careless and self centered and do NOT yield to pedestrians.

Also, comparing our city of 330k to NYC and their walking culture is really apples to oranges.
