The article notes this about data source: "As the original poster noted, the map is based on a City Data list of the top 101 U.S. counties by firearm ownership, but City Data does not give the source for the list’s information."

For Idaho and Montana, it's self preservation. The population density is so thin, many of them can go months without seeing other people in the winter. They need to be prepared to protect themselves. They're big on hunting and living off of the land too.
