Yikes. I guess it doesn't happen every time, but by now there's more than enough evidence that it can and does happen.

According to this article (the first I ran across)
Pittsburgh airport leases acreage for gas drilling | Arcticgas.gov

"The first royalties will be paid to the airport in 2015. The deal could net the airport $500 million: a $50 million upfront bonus and $450 million in royalties."

Half a billion dollars is a heck of a reason/incentive to drill.

Yes, but what is the money going to be used for? It needs to help the Pittsburgh region in some way. Make our airport more than competitive, make it impossible to overlook and create great access to the city. If we can do that, we might get more international exposure and growth. Now if they are just going to line some pockets with the money and it isn't spelled out, then leave the gas in the ground.

I can't answer that. I was just trying to throw in my 2 cents on the subject "why is pittsburgh airport FRACKING???"

Half a billion is probably a good reason on why they're doing it.

Fracking really doesn't seem to be a big issue. The media and some environmental groups want to turn it into one, but the reality is that the impact is relatively minimal. There are sooooo many other things that are more important from an environmental standpoint.

Like most things, those that benefit from it love it and those that don't see any money from it hate it. If the shoe was on the other foot, no complaints would be heard from those opposing it.

To think that anybody would turn down $500m is extremely amusing.
