Job prospects drawing workers to Western Pennsylvania

Western Pennsylvania gained about 11,000 more workers than it lost to other parts of the country during a five-year period, according to Census Bureau figures.

...

By 2012, only two metro areas with more than 1 million employees reached job numbers equal to their pre-recession peaks: Houston and Pittsburgh.
The article also has a graphic of what states are the top places for people to move here and out of by state. I was surprised to see such positive numbers from Virginia (and barley negative for Maryland). Maybe young Pittsburghers of the 2010's see NoVA for being highly overrated.

That's good news. Western PA will certainly benefit from an influx of well-educated people with more progressive ideas and upward mobility. I noted that a transplant said there are good opportunities for African Americans. So perhaps the locals have been mistaking lack of employable skills for racism.

Default No employable skills on resume means no interview

"A" transplant, meaning a whole big ONE. ONE needs to settle in for a bit and get to know Pittsburgh a little better, won't take long I think.

When someone is very excited about a person's resume over the phone (that is if they cannot detect race over the phone - or ignore a resume due to an ethnic sounding name) then once the candidate walks into the interview, the interviewer exhibits thinly veiled aversion, then that is not about lack of skills. Countless African Americans experience this every day in Pittsburgh as they seek employment.

It appears to me that the interviewers think they are hiding their racism behind poker faces, but their kinetic energy gives them away.

Is this a recorded statistic?

ANY young person, first of all, is at a disadvantage in finding good employment. Add to that PRESENTATION - what you wear, how you respond, how you hold yourself. I am positive "countless" white men experience this too. But like these supposed throngs of African-Americans who are interviewing and being turned away by a closeted Klansmen (I exaggerate your insinuation), they probably do not impress and have no idea that you have to surrender yourself in a way.

Leaving hoop earrings or the ball cap at home is a start.

Your perceptions only show why this is a pervasive problem. The broad circle of associates I know to have experienced these insults are not wearing ghetto earrings and ghetto ball caps. They are intelligent people dressed appropriately in professional business attire.
