With climate change, the east coast will be hit with stronger, more frequent hurricanes. will these have effects on pittsburgh? even if the Burgh just gets aftermath of these storms, could they be intense enough to have serious consequences? Will downtown get flooded out?

The last remnants of a hurricane to reach this far inland was Ivan in 2004 or 2005 (I forget the exact year). It caused some pretty significant flooding in low-lying valley towns near the rivers (I believe Etna and Millvale were hard hit. For most areas, it didn't cause significant flooding and felt like a huge thunderstorm with winds that lasted for several hours.

Hurricane Agnes - June 14-25, 1972

Likely not. Even if the (questionable) predictions of more and stronger hurricanes turns out to be accurate they lose strength when crossing land. The energy source for hurricanes is open and warm water. Moving over land sucks the wind out of the storm, although heavy rainfall will oftimes be present.

An example would be Tropical Storm Lee which parked itself over the MD/PA/VA area a couple years ago.

As a scientist who understands the statistical uncertainties associated with climate models, I can say with absolute certainty the answer to the OP's questions is, without reservation, 'maybe'.

Seriously. No one knows. It seems likely it'll get hotter in this area, and have more volatile weather. Hurricane remnants? Maybe. But personally, I'd just get on with your life. If this is a big issue for you, do your best to reduce your carbon footprint, and vote for politicians who take action against climate change seriously. There's is little else anyone of use can do ...

I remember Gore citing a spate of hurricanes on SNL as evidence of Global Warming. After that, we've had a relative dearth of hurricanes hitting the US. More to fear from tornadoes than hurricanes.

I have a theory that way too many Americans watch way too much TV.

The Miami Hurricanes were in Pittsburgh on November 29, 2013 and beat Pitt 41-31.
There are no plans for the hurricanes to return to Heinz Field until 2015.
