I'm looking to buy a house in the Pittsburgh area and am looking for advice specifically with regard to my commute. I work in Oakland and will be making a daily ~9-5 commute to/from there. One of my requirements for a house is finding something with a reasonably large yard, which makes buying within the city nearly impossible.

Current I'm living in Ross Township and find the commute down 279 and across Bigelow to be fine on most days. So I've started my home search with the North Hills areas of Ross, Wexford, Shaler, Allison Park, etc. I've lived in the area for about 6 years, and in my experience, the drive into the city from east, west, or south is a fairly miserable experience.

However, I thought I'd check with the wisdom on here and see if there were any areas I'm overlooking where houses can be found on a decent amount of land (around 0.3+ acres) in a reasonably safe neighborhood.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I commute into oakland quite often from mt washington and its honestly a breeze. less than 10 minutes most mornings and 20 min max if things are really backed up. Unfortunately you would have a hard time finding a large lot around here. There are alternatives to the ft pitt tunnel if coming from the south.

brookline, beechview, dormont, mt lebanon could all be ok and not much different time wise than the northern areas you mention.

what other criteria besides a large yard do you have?

I would suggest some of the houses near Chatham University. Close to Oakland and a lot of these houses have some nice yards. When I used to go to school at Chatham one guy had two Dalmatians in his yard. Price is probably high. Murray Hill Ave I believe.

Well, they weren't that nice!

On Google Maps I see a house at the intersection of wilkins and murray hill for sale by howard hanna. I'd be curious what that sold for. I'll see if I can find it on the county website.

What is your budget? How many bedrooms? Do you care about the school district? .3 acre is 13,000 square feet?

5708 WILKINS AVE
That's what I was seeing. Sold for 155k in 1999. Not listed now, so they probably wanted 200k+.

328K and it sold in july 2012. Id bet it would sell over 400k easily right now. But yes that is a nice house and lot.

There are yards to be had in the city (I have a pretty big one--nice and flat too!) but I'd need to know more about what kind of house you're looking for and what your price range is.
