It sucks, but one wonders why he didn't incorporate it as a nonprofit long ago.

I had a chance to stop by there last year. Tranquil place. I hope it's possible to keep it as a parklet of installment art.

The thread title is alarmist and misleading. The article doesn't say that Randyland is being "killed". He has to find a way to finance the place in a neighborhood that is rapidly gentrifying... however, its demise is clearly not a foregone conclusion.

Would saying the founder & proprietor of Randyland is being forced out of Randyland as a result of not being able to pay his increased tax bill be a better title?

It's still pretty alarmist. If you read the article Randy himself sounds optimistic and is already speaking with the Mayor and community and cultural groups, and wants to remain involved, whatever happens. I'm sure crowdfunding and incorporation as a non-profit are next steps.

Its a bit more complex than that for a non-profit to obtain tax exempt status.

And since the gentleman lives on the premises, I'm not sure how well that would work out. Churches and church owned school buildings are exempt, the parsonage for a priest or reverend are taxable.

Thanks for drawing attention to this -- but really, Randy is deeply loved, and the whole North side community knows that he played an enormous role in making the area what it is, so I am optimistic that a good solution will be found. If anything I am grateful to the article for increasing awareness about the situation.

Wait a minute. Randyland's assessment is a whopping $41,500. With the homestead exemption, it's taxed as being worth $23,500. It's understandable that people worry about their assessments rising as a result of nearby property sales (although his neighborhood doesn't have half-million dollar sales). But it seems unlikely that Randyland will be taxed out of existence in the near future.
