there's no question east liberty is improving

the fact that the former rainbow fashion on main street penn avenue is being
replaced by a dollar tree is clear evidence of improvement and gentrification

also the fact that local journalists immediately attach the name east liberty to
a shooting that happened in bloomfield is clear evidence of improvement

(btw, kdka corrected their article and removed the name east liberty.
the fact that the picture of the street sign in the article clearly says bloomfield
probably had something to do with that decision)

i would say East End. I used to live on Melwood and it was always interesting how every other street said something different.... Oakland, Bloomfield, Shadyside, East Liberty once u went down a little further... Boggled my brain a few times.

I hate to sound stupid but I don't know what a dollar tree is and several posters are calling it yuppie. I live in Friendship on Penn right across from East Liberty. The term dollar tree makes me think low end. Am I missing the sarcasm or is this some magical store? I Googled it and it make me think Jo Anne fabrics which would be good. What type of store is this?

It's sarcasm. The Dollar Tree is a dollar store. CFP has a bug up his butt about how East Liberty is simultaneously a horribly dangerous low-rent gang-infested wasteland and a yuppie-infested gentrifying Brooklyn. Noting that a Dollar Tree is going in on Penn is supposed to be some kind of zinger gotcha directed towards people who think East Liberty is mostly just fine.

Fascinating isn't it?

I was in the new zekes space today next to the former rainbow. It is going to be pretty nice and will have a lot of outdoor seating.

Is it the old Antons space? Between Sam Bostonian and the new Dollar Tree? If so, that is a great space for a cafe / diner.

No, to the right of the rainbow / new dollar tree. It was an "internet store" which was apparently computers that had cherrymaster style gambling on them. They are going to demo the facade in a week or two.
