Hi all, I've just purchased a motor scooter to get around and I'm wondering about parking in the Golden Triangle. I work on Wood Street and need a place to park; I'd hope parking for these fuel-efficient bikes would be reduced or even free, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Are there any options besides parking in a garage?

I've considered the area underneath the Crosstown Blvd bridge on Fifth; is this safe even when not a lot of riders are parking there? If worse comes to worse, I might just press my luck and park it next to the bike rack at PNC Plaza... seems secluded enough and there's enough space, picture below, haha.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Bike rack is fine. Just be sure to chain it with something thick and metal.

Thanks! I have a pretty strong chain lock, but the only thing I'm worried about is getting a parking ticket cause of that.

If it was a smaller scooter, I would think nothing of parking it at the rack. When I was in the union, alot of the guys would bring their motorcycles in to work. They would lease a space in one of the garages, it was dirt cheap per month, they could fit 3 or 4 bikes in some of the odd spaces in the garage that a car would never go.

It's a pretty normal size as far as motor scooters go. A bit smaller than a comparable motorcycle, I suppose. I'd considered looking for a lease at a garage but can't find much as far as that goes, so I figured a scooter wouldn't look really out of place parked at a bike rack.

EDIT: Picture of the model I have.

If you can deal with 49cc, (depending on hills), you can buy a moped and use the bike lanes and park it most anywhere a bicycle can go.

I'd considered a 49cc, but had to get a 149cc because of the hills around where I live and on the way to work. Picture of my model is above.

If I saw that at a bike rack I would report it. Bike racks are not for motorcycles. Sorry, if you want to use a bike rack, you need to pedal. Good luck, you are going to get reported. just saying.

Not trolling - but genuinely curious: is there a law prohibiting this? Which city agency/department would have jurisdiction over bikeracks - Parking Authority, Public Works, Police?

We've done this before, no?

Yes, it's illegal. City code (§ 541.01) says you can't park a vehicle on the sidewalk except for "pedalcycle".

PA state law (see the link below) defines a pedalcycle as "A vehicle propelled solely by human-powered pedals or a pedalcycle with electric assist." It defines a "motorized pedalcycle" as being under 50cc, as was mentioned above.

Section 102 - Title 75 - VEHICLES

Like all other violations, the police would have jurisdiction. I don't know about the others.
