As much as I dislike the "We are..." culture, THON does do a lot of good. The article you linked to doesn't exemplify the "rah rah Penn State" mentality, either; Greek organizations have their own toxic tendencies.

Combine the drug and alcohol abuse and the embarrassment of women from that fraternity at Penn State, and the casual racism from that (former) fraternity at the University of Oklahoma, and you know what they call it at large state universities in the South?

Saturday.

Edit: Ignore previous commend; I didn't scroll down to see there was a punchline

Of course, at the U of Oklahoma, they came down hard on the fraternity and the offenders. They seem to have very little tolerance for that type of behavior. At Penn State, the culture is much different, and we will probably get "cooperating with authorities" until it leaves the news cycle, and then the reinstatement of that frat in a year or so.

My best friend is a professor at Penn State who lives in College Township, just outside the campus boundaries. I visit every month and am always amazed by how friendly the students at-large are.

I'm rather irked that so many of you are willing to write off all of the POSITIVE things happening in Happy Valley on account of the Sandusky/Paterno/Spanier scandal. Jerry Sandusky is going to die in prison for what he did. The NCAA issued sanctions and levied fines to punish Penn State. Paterno is dead. Spanier is cowardly suing for "having his reputation tainted", and I hope his case is thrown out. It's time to heal, folks. We can't keep punishing an entire campus for the egregious actions of a few forever.

But here is the problem... the reason why Jerry was allowed to do what he did... and the reason those disgusting acts were covered up... is because Penn State has a culture problem. The football program is more important than anything. Joe is thought of as a God like figure. Those are problems and nothing with that culture has changed.
