I've mostly heard it with the "hay" from people in this region.

I used to live near Monongahela, my daughter lives there, and everyone in that area refers to it as Mononga-HAY-la.

It's a nice town, lots of antique shoppes in the area.

blessings, Shen

Talking Monongahela

I was born in Monongahela.
It is Mon-ong-a-HELL-a.
Old indian word.
Comes from the legend...

An indian was on the banks of the river and dropped a coin into the water.
His response was "Money go Hell-a"...thus the name.

Anyone who says it any other way is not a true Monongahelian!

Mononga HAY la is how I've always heard. Pittsburgh has three rivers, but the Mon is the one Pittsburghers hold dear to their hearts.

Visted Monongahela in 1950. Stayed with a VP of US Steel named Loren Westhaver. Learned how to eat corn on the cob there! Lovely people. You all like that?

Born and raised in Monongahela until I moved away in the late 80s. I always said it and heard it this way ^^.
Also, often with a 'GYA' instead of a simple 'GA'.
HAY-LA was common too, but I think more frequently among the older generation.

MonongaHAYla. Or, for those of us from the Mid Mon Valley - it's "Mon City".

I've always said MonongaHAYla or MonongaHELLa, when not referring to it as the Mon. That's also due in part to being in Morgantown, which is in Monongalia (Monong-AY-lia) County. Apparently, when the county was first chartered, they meant to call it Monongahela County, but no one really knew how to spell it, so Monongalia was sent instead.
