There is but one thing left to do here, to make everyone calm down and to reboot....

Naked pool party at Copanut's. Extreme, I know. I don't like it any more than yinz, but it's the only way.

Back about 3-4 years ago, it was about promise. People were weathering the housing crisis storm (caused by thousands - affecting millions) while here in Pittsburgh, it may not have registered as more than a blip on the radar. Here, there was planning - stadiums, a T tunnel, a casino, new housing starting to transform neighborhoods that were decrepit....there was a sense of excitement, and almost everyone was one of those "cheerleaders".

Well, if you remember Pittsburgh for all decades of your life as stagnant, drab, broken, cracked, rusted, gray...you get the idea, you couldn't blame anyone for bright-eyed optimism and joy.

Fast forward - I might be wrong, but I think a majority of posts are by real estate agents, developers, investors, speculators. Their involvement here is not what is good for Pittsburgh for the sake of the home we love and the common good, but for the sake of making money. Of course, that is capitalism - and we all benefit from it, but it's apparent that the posts, themes, and attitudes now come "from a different place" than just a few years ago.

That, and the political correctness and that passion for "our way or you're a racist/neocon/etc." have at times soured the spirit of educational, polite, informative discourse here.

But c'est la vie. This is still the only internet forum I find valuable and enjoyable!

And to think, I will still never see Hopes topless in the Jeep! (an old thread a couple may remember).
I found CD while looking for some information about my hometown, Beaver Falls, on Google. That was January of 2007. I got directed to this forum. That was 8 years ago. Hard to believe. I could have probably written my novel in all the time I've spent on CD.

Anyway, Google had just moved to Pittsburgh, and I got so confused reading some of the posts here. I was beginning to wonder if Google had moved their international headquarters to Pgh, seriously. I went and Googled it, LOL! Well, no, Google's HQ was still in CA; they had opened an engineering office in Pgh, just as they had in many other cities around the world.

There was a "guru" on this forum at the time. This person had lived in Pittsburgh for two years, and had left about five years earlier. Other gurus have come and gone since then. The recession came, and hopefully is almost gone.

There's a "je ne sais quoi" about this forum, like all forums. I can tell you there are other city forums where people aren't so immediately defensive if someone says, "this place is so brown; has the worst drivers (seen on almost every city forum); is too expensive (ditto); doesn't have enough jobs (ditto); is too dry; has too many hipsters"; etc.

Oh, well.

Selltheburgh is active as a realtor, landlord, and small-scale developer. I think Jea(random numbers) is a small-time landlord in Mount Washington. Guy is in construction. Those are the only currently active posters I can think of who are actually involved the industry, at least publicly.

That's not been my perception at all. The people who are agents are up front about it and don't post seeking clients. They offer relevant insight when asked or when they have something to share and I've never thought it appeared to benefit them personally.

A few years ago, I had a question related to real estate and two agents answered me personally. Neither tried to get my contact info or get business from me. And because of that, I'd be likely to contact them if we are ever in the market.

Half the nasty interaction that occurs is usually started by a troll-y post for just that reason.

Their personal monetary gain is not what I meant at all, by the way. I was talking about the posts overall, what drives threads, and what prompts people to have interest in the board and their city in general.

I think there are some people who move and think they are better than people who have stayed. Then there are also some people who look at people who leave and feel betrayed or something. At the end of the day there is a huge world out there and everyone needs to go to the place that works best for them.

Yeah, found that out the hard way with SCR.

Don't have a pool, we could always do North Park.
