We are a fairly large family looking to possible relocate to the Polish Hill area in the next year. It would be me, my husband and two children still at home (ages 16 and 2). We lived in the NJ area for 20 +/- years and moved to rural southwestern Virginia last year. We are interested in renting as our credit is not good enough to purchase, as neither are our finances . We've even thought of urban homesteading, but that's for a whole other thread...

So, with 2 kids in tow (I'll leave the chickens to a neighbor ) what are the pros and cons of living in Polish Hill? We want our youngest daughter to go to Saturday school for her Polish language skills, too

Polish Hill is a small neighborhood just to the east of Downtown. It's centrally located yet still "secluded" somewhat as it's on a hillside between the Strip District and the Hill District. It's almost entirely residential, but it has a few watering holes and other small businesses. It has extremely convenient access to Downtown (busway), the food markets of the Strip District and some of the more interesting neighborhoods like Lawrenceville (interior design shopping, art galleries), Bloomfield (ethnic restaurants, grocers) and Oakland (universities, museums). The housing in Polish Hill is extremely affordable. It tends to be 100 year old plus 3-story rowhouses. It's quite dense and hilly. The neighborhood is noted for its spectacular "polish cathedral", one of the most recognizable church structures in Pittsburgh. Polish Hill has a small playground and I believe there's some sort of enclosed recreational facility there.

Evergrey summed up the neighborhood pretty well. I think it should also be noted that it is not far from one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city (the Hill District). However, Polish Hill itself is extremely safe.
