We'll be driving from Pittsburgh to Buffalo in late June and trying to determine what the most scenic route would be / the route with interesting stops along the way. While it adds an hour, the route through the Allegheny National Forest seems as it would be the most scenic, but that's just a guess. Anyone have any suggestions?

I would take route 8 through Franklin and then 62 to NY. Drive along Chautauqua Lake and then take 90 to Buffalo or a rural road to Buffalo. If you have the time.

If you haven't ever driven along the Allegheny River, then you are missing out. I've been all over the US and it is one of the best rural drives in the country.

Is 8 to Franklin worth it or would 79 be better (saves half an hour)

for example would this route be a good one?

I like the route suggested. You can take 79 to Rt. 108 thorough Slippery Rock and up to Franklin and up 62. It is a nice route along the river and up through Warren, PA.

FWIW, Rt. 8 or 79 to 105 to 8 is about the same time interestingly from my area, but if you are near 279, then you should just take it up to 108.

Copy what gg and bcb said, it's a pretty drive. I do it at least twice a Summer on my way to Lake Chautauqua.

How about 22 to 119 to 219 up to Buffalo?

Takes you through some interesting towns, like Punxy and Johnsonburg known for its famed paper mill, as well as nice countryside and forests.

Sounds good, this will tentatively be our route unless anyone else has additional suggestions

I drove from Buffalo to Pittsburgh last fall via the scenic route. We started in Buffalo at the wing festival and did some wine tasting. Then we headed east a bit to beautiful Letchworth State Park (a must see).
Letchworth State Park - NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation

We then headed south through Bradford and then over to Warren via the National Forest with stops at the Kinzua Dam.Kinzua Dam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
We then followed the river south through Tidioute and Franklin and followed Rt. 8 the whole way to the North Hills.

This drive takes a little longer, but it is very nice and very remote in some places.

You might want to take 62 from Franklin to Warren, I hear it's a very scenic route.
