They don't live in Pittsburgh, they live where everyone drives and parking is plentiful and free. Or "free" at least.
So they normally drive. Gas isn't free. Fuel would cost as much/more. I've never experienced the expectations of getting things for free and I have family in and visit the city quite often.

I think most Americans have a huge amount of cognitive dissonance around how much driving actually costs.

I park there all the time, and have been for a couple of years. Even if they did mind, there's no way that they would know. But the reality is, a casino is never going to not want you to walk through their floor.

Yep. Also, there are free coffee and soda machines if you feel like getting some of that for your walk over to the T. And if it makes one feel better, drop 1,5,10,or 20 dollars in a slot machine or on RED on the roulette wheel, and you're now an actual casino customer using their parking garage.

Eat at their buffet. It's not bad for a buffet. Grand View Buffet

Right. Cost of vehicle, fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc...

It's certainly more than $7-$10.

I obviously had no idea how many expect things for free. No wonder city/county taxes are so ridiculous. I'm happy to only pay as I go.

The free fare zone partially helps cut bus congestion downtown. Because you don't pay in downtown, buses aren't sitting in downtown as long as they would have to if everyone had to pay when boarding.

I'd imagine it also encourages people to park on the North Shore and ride in instead of clogging downtown with more cars.

If PAT changes the way it collects fares, the Free Fare Zone might indeed become less useful or necessary for buses. I'd imagine they'd have to install turnstiles or something in the downtown T stations (unless they used a Proof of Payment fare system where you'd have to carry a ticket to show to fare controllers at random)

This wouldn't be an issue when you have a culture of Tap 'n Go, as opposed to people needlessly taking five mins to feed the fare box .... 10 people can board and pay if everyone is tapping, in the same space it takes one person to feed the box 2.50$

Even with the current system, the Free Fare zone for buses Downtown is nil... The "T" free fare zone still make since and is more utilized by people than the buses.

There is a stairwell in the parking garage that exits directly to the valet parking driveway, in case you really wanted to avoid the casino floor for whatever reason.
