Make it inconvenient for businesses to operate downtown and they'll move to the suburbs.

You guys do realize this is proposed for Liberty west of Stanwix and not the whole CBD?

They're talking about the intersections of Stanwix with Liberty, Penn Ave and Forbes Ave.

No traffic or pedestrian signals.

Tijuana has intersections like this.

Ambulance chasing lawyers will like it, though.

This would seem to be an appropriate time to interject into the conversation that my inner Yinzer prohibits me from ever getting on board with any concept that has a dopey, foreign sounding name like "woonerf". Ever.

It's also possible it would make it a more pleasant and desirable place to spend your time and money. If traffic flow and cheap parking are the only things that matter then downtown can't compete with the suburbs ever for those people. Cities have to be good cities to compete rather than try to be bad suburbs (by that I mean a bad version of the suburbs not that suburbs are bad). In my experience the worst part of getting around isn't downtown traffic but regional traffic and specifically the lack of a regional transportation alternative to the tunnels and highways.

Isn't that just a byproduct of where you live though? It's way easier for me living in Brighton Heights to stick to city destinations than to head out to the burbs (other than McKees Rocks/Stowe/Bellevue). I'm sure Penn Hills has some stuff that I'd be interested in, but it's way more of a hassle to get there for me.

Heck yeah, same here. I rarely go to the suburbs because it involves crossing bridges and tunnels and suchlike and that's a pain. I don't really think about parking that much, probably partly because I've lived here for a long time and know the tricks to finding free or cheap parking, and partly because I'm just used to shelling out a couple bucks every now and then at a meter, I don't view it as anything out of the ordinary that needs to be avoided.
