I had to attend a city council meeting & among the topics that came up was that vehicle breakins are at an all time high in the city this year (primarily this summer). Not that it helps sometimes, but keep all valuables out of your car. & if you see someone breaking into a car do everyone a favor & severely maim them as I have no confidence the city police will be catching them.

There's been a problem in Friendship, Highland Park, Morningside and East Liberty this summer. Not so much break-ins except for Friendship, but stolen items from unlocked cars. iPods, gps, spare change, etc.

Surprisingly I had a bag of change in the hatch of a 12 year old car for the past 6 years that was used as emergency coin op parking meter and/or pizza money at cash only places. I took it to coinstar last week and there was $75 in it with only 5 quarters and the rest 10 cents or lower. We had a stack of cd's taken from the car when it was unlocked in Highland Park 6 years ago and they didn't grab the bag - which probably had more quarters then.

People aren't so smart. Even spare change will give some kid a reason to smash a window. Somebody went through 3 of my neighbors vehicles a few summers ago, all had unlocked doors. Change, CD's, rummaged through the glove boxes.

That's what I've heard, here...and that crime is all blown out of proportion by local media.

Hard to figure why the police are reluctant to investigate or respond...

The Pittsburgh Police generally don't even investigate car thefts, much less just stuff stolen from vehicles.

Add East Hills to the list. My wife never locks the car doors. We had several reports earlier this year. They are mainly change. I had a $250.00 pair of sneakers (Still in the box) in the car and they thieves only wanted change. I can assume it is drug addicts looking for quick money. I do know that is is a group of individuals. My neighbor caught them in the act.

What do $250 sneakers look like? That might just have been a matter of drug addiction affecting someone's morals but not their good taste.

I've had great stereo head units ripped out of my dash over the years. It is more than "Oh, Gee Whiz, that was three hundred bucs:" It is more the fact that you don't even know me, now I gotta be inconvenienced for a week or two to get my window fixed etc. while you crackheads and junkies sell my stereo for $25.00 and then get a quick fix. Basically, you just injected my stereo into you arm. I guess the drug makes you feel no shame or no pain for your actions.

They look similar to the nikes on Back To The Future movie.
