Avid outdoor dude here. I'd say get a decent fleece (don't need to go broke doing this, yeah Marmot is nice but LL Bean gets you same warmth for much less) and pair it up with a high quality shell jacket from a reputable label. You're covered there. But the warmest jacket I own was given to me by my father, called a "Bern" and is of the Carhartt work coat style. Looks plain and all but built like a tank and way warmer than most dedicated winter coats I've owned. I have Marmot's, North Face etc but when it's really cold I grab that khaki colored Bern coat.

Go to Marshalls or TJ Maxx now and see what they have. You can get name brand coats for much less. I know you say you are doing it online but if you want to go out and about, you can get some good deals there. Buy the coat a size big so they can get two years out of it... If sled riding is in the plans this winter, I'd also get a pair of water proof, insulate snow pants/bibs too. Your children will appreciate it if they spend any time out in the snow.

Personally, I prefer the Columbia style or similar that has the zip out fleece liner with the water proof/wind proof shell. You get three coats for the price of one going that route.
