hi
I live an hour away from pittsburgh in a small town and tomorrow I would like to go with the family to Pittsburgh to spend the day there. I have been there only two times in the past and both days were spent in malls. I don't want to go to malls or musuems, are there any nice places by the river good for families with kids? thanks alot

What sort of thing do you want to do, and how old are the kids? Carnegie Science Center might make sense, or you can just go explore the Strip district or walk around near the point downtown. Another idea would be to have lunch up on Mount Washington -- it's not by the river but you would have great river views, and kids of any age might enjoy riding an incline while you're here.

hi RogersParkTransplant...yes sorry i forgot to mention their ages, they are 2 and 7. Does Mt.Washington has places to eat? or is it just a place where you can walk or take photos of the city...As for the science center, it closes 5 I guess on Saturday and that would be early for our schedule since we would be there at 4 or after

Carnegie Science Center: USS Requin Submarine

The submarine and Science Center are pretty neat.

Look up the Shiloh Grill and the Grandview bakery -- that little stretch has cute little restaurants and is good for a family walk. The Monongahela incline is there too, though I honestly don't know its hours, etc.

PS: I should say we have only gone up to Mt W / Grandview 3-4 times ourselves -- I am no expert on the restaurant scene there; we have tried a few and all have been fine. There's a variety of options; Shiloh is more of a landmark than a recommendation. The bakery is pretty cute, though, and our kids go wild over it.

Be advised that the Monongahela Incline is currently closed for maintenance. The Duquesne Incline is open; however, there's not much at the top of that incline except for a few upscale restaurants (oh, and the view, of course!)

The North Shore River Walk (by PNC Park---the Pirates' stadium) is very nice and offers a great view of Downtown. Nearby are the Carnegie Science Center; the Children's Museum (fun for kids as old as yours); the National Aviary (which I want to get to even more now after seeing a bird get hit by a car yesterday ); and West Park.

The dinosaurs at the Carnegie Natural History Museum in Oakland would be pretty cool for kids. The zoo up in Highland Park is also nice.

.
The Port Authority is running a shuttle bus up the hill, while the Incline is closed, tourists as well as residents will still be able to make it to the top without having to hike up Burma Road.
