Hello I am new to this site, and need some help finding a house that accepts section 8. I am a single mother of 5 children and need to move out of the area that I live in because it is being taken over by drugs and violence. My oldest son has gotten involved in the drugs and I am trying to get out of here before he returns home from his treatment. I am a very hard working mom, I do work 2 jobs at the moment to provide for my family. If anyone knows of any 4 bedroom homes for rent, not apartments because I do have smaller children who do like to run and play, could you please let me know. Im looking anywhere in the Pittsburgh area, as long as it is a good neighborhood.

Thanks a bunch!

Well nice responses so far.

I suggest Verona or Penn Hills as options. Get out of the city and things would be better. Being poor in the city is not good. Better to be poor in the burbs.

The problem with being poor in the burbs is a lack of public transport to many of those locations. Being poor often means being without a car as well.

I'm told that city neighborhoods like Squirrel Hill and Greenfield are quite suburban. so they are out too.

Plenty of buses in Verona and Penn Hills.

I think Pgh housing authority has a list that is posted/or at least used to be posted online for houses/apartments that have been inspected & approved for section 8. You can always call them.

The houses must pass the inspection to be approved, which is why they have a list.
This would be your best source--because those properties are ready to go.

Just because a landlord says they might consider section 8-that doesn't mean they will be approved upon inspection.
The landlord is not obligated to comply with the section 8 inspection requirements, if they fail their inspection-- they have the right to simply state they choose not to rent section 8.
The only time a landlord is required to comply is if the property is already section 8, tenants live there & they receive $$/vouchers for the program.

I've known some landlords who refused section 8 because of the additional $$ required to pass/meet the requirements of the inspection, & their places were nice, but didn't meet some
specific to section 8 criteria, so the landlord decided not to deal with the hassle, & just take a cash paying tenant.

Cases like that, it just wastes time-but it occurs more than you think-especially in neighborhoods where housing is in demand-which is usually the better neighborhoods to live in--go with what you know is a sure thing.
