If you're looking for shiny new whatever Pittsburgh is the wrong city.

FWIW I have a number of friends living on Mount Washington. Gives you access to a supermarket, the train below, Station Square, the Southside, and downtown.

Nah, she was pretty clear that she didn't want "shiny and new". Having lived in DC, and NYC, she's obviously used to some age on her cities. It's usually people from the sunbelt who have a hard time wrapping their heads around the age, and grit of cities up north.

I love Mt Washington but that strikes me as a total pain for anyone commuting daily to the North Shore. If there's something I don't know about the best way to get from one to the other, either by car or public transport, I would be eager to hear it. It's not impossible, I know, but still it's not very intuitive either.

Flying down Greenleaf street, you are right at the West End Bridge and on the North Shore in seconds.

Hey, thanks! I think I have only tried Saw Mill Run, and had bad luck with traffic...

What sort of commute are you used to having? Beyond the shortcut diving down you could hop on the incline and walk slightly over a mile (depending on where it is on the North Shore) if you wanted to do so.

That's a shorter distance than Cambridge to Boston's downtown or Brooklyn to Manhattan so...

Worst case you catch the bus by the overlook and it takes you extra time to get downtown (or at least there wasn't an express line when I was there).

Just really depends on the street you're on and the winter snow/ice when it comes to living up there.

Here are some in the downtown area, which is close enough to North Side.

City View (used to be called Washington Plaza): City View Apartments, Pittsburgh Apartments for Rent, Apartments for Rent in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Rental Apartments

River Vue: http://www.rivervuepgh.com/

201 Stanwix: 201 Stanwix in Pittsburgh, PA | PMC Property Group Apartments
(PMC Property Group has a lot of luxurous apartments in the city)

These are all meteorically beyond the OP's desired price range. This isn't the "cheap" Pittsburgh anymore.

Thanks all! Yeah, "shiny and new" isn't my thing, the luxury apartments downtown not so much either, and I'm used to pretty long commutes from Brooklyn to Midtown I've been walking around Bloomfield/Friendship today and it's lovely. Lawrenceville later today and North Side tomorrow!
