Insulbrick homes at 4412 Plummer, it was bought by an Oakland real estate concern in 2014 but has been vacant for at least 6 years since it was damaged (and repaired afterwards) by a fire next door in Locarna Way.

Should this house be preserved? The current owners would like to bring in down for new residential construction.

A local individual presented a petition to grant the home historic status.

A local individual who also sits on the Pittsburgh Historic Review Commission.

I'm also pretty sure she posts here.

The number of insulbrick homes has certainly decreased over the past 30 or 40 years since they quit manufacturing it.

But apparently the reason for the historic designation is the age of the home as one of the first in this section of L'ville. The owners of the home feel it is in too bad a shape to be saved, and will fall on its own within a few years.

I wouldn't bet against them on that.

Kind of a rude awakening for the developer if they lose and end up with an unrentable undemoable shell on their hands. This is going to cost somebody a lot of money for something they wouldn't have predicted.

Why would a developer - or home owner - be allowed to let their property become a safety hazard for the community, regardless of whether or not it's deemed historic?

Actually, the developer would like to remedy the situation by razing the structure.

But since it may be deemed historic, they have been stymied in that attempt.
