The annual KDKA Children's Hospital campaign used to be an annual feature in town's 3 big department stores in the 70's and 80's.

They broadcast 1 weeks in the store window at Gimbel's, Horne's and Kaufmann's.

It was really quite popular, people liked watching radio broadcasts being done and the people were lined up to make their contributions.

Downtown used to be a pretty impressive place to shop, and store window broadcasting was popular even outside the Christmas season. KQV did their broadcasts all year round from the window in the 1st floor of the Chamber of Commerce Building on 7th Ave for many years.

The older among us surely do remember downtown with the everyday hustle and bustle then totally come to life at Christmas. Highways and malls took that all away from us and will never replace what once was. Anyone watching the movie Christmas Story can see a taste of the downtown life, department stores, 8 stories high, and windows decorated with the things that kids used to dream of.
