The top story of our area is some snow. I guess we can look at the bright side and figure there is no real news to report, so they just fill in with weather. Kind of pathetic in a way, but at least there is nothing going on.

We got 5" today, not a dusting. It's not a major snowstorm, but it was definitely newsworthy.

Here is the way the local news works:

The more viewers they have, the more money they make from advertising..

With this said, it is in their best interests to exaggerate every story in a manner that allows for great teasers & keeps people glued to their tvs.. The weather is no exception.. The more they fear monger about the weather, the more little old ladies will panic & call everyone they know to watch the news..

Personally, I stopped watching the local news when they showed a teaser for a weather event (the remnants of the storm that caused the Joplin tornados).. They showed the Joplin footage & said something like "The storm that caused this damage is ravaging the US and heading our way.. Tune in to find out when it will hit your area & what you can do to prepare".. When you tuned in, the weather man essentially said "light rain"..

If you were out driving in it like I was, it was no dusting. It was white out conditions at times, the roads were terrible. It was coming down hard, maybe 5 inches in less than an hour.

Pittsburgh officially got 4.7 inches yesterday, hardly a dusting. Yesterday will likely end up being one of the snowiest days of this winter. I swear, everyone in this area acts either like 4-6 inches is the end of the world or "just a coating"; it's neither. Traffic was awful during rush hour, especially in the north and east yesterday.

I was out making deliveries during both snow squalls yesterday afternoon. The roads were horrendous. A school bus actually crashed in Polish Hill at Herron & Bigelow. I saw an accident at Fifth & Shady; Fifth & Frankstown; and saw cars struggling to make it up Frankstown Road near Verona Road in Penn Hills. The 5" of snow we got was most certainly newsworthy, especially considering they were only calling for 1"-3".

When you have an 86 mile backup on the Turnpike, that's gonna make news.

It would be a beautiful thing if people who don't have the ability to drive in snow would cease to do so.

I don't think we got more than 3" in Squirrel Hill or Oakland. Speaking of Oakland, the PAA should really do something about their sidewalk. It doesn't look like they made any effort at all, which is horrible given the location and the amount of resources they must have.

Your 'dusting' made a friend's 3 hour max trip from Columbus turn into a 12 hour fiasco.
