I disagree, the Erie Bayhawks are one of the top teams in the NBA Development League in terms of attendance and high school basketball is big in Erie.

I didn't even know Erie had a basketball team. I have never been to a game there, didn't know about it when I was there, never heard of it mentioned in Pittsburgh, and don't know anyone from Erie that has ever mentioned one.

High school sports are irrelevant. Soccer is big in the schools around here but there isn't a fan base.

????????

High school sports are essential, especially in sports without club teams such as football, for developing pro talent and fan bases.

It's no accident that states like OH, PA and TX have rabid pro football fans. High school football is very popular in those states.

By contrast, I remember attending a play-off game at a large high school in a Los Angeles suburb and was shocked that the home team had perhaps only 500 fans, if that, in attendance and no marching band.

Is it a coincidence that LA hasn't had a pro football team for two decades and many didn't care?
