Sanitation worker in NY makes $112k.

The article goes on to state that since it's an un-glamorous job that there aren't a lot of young folks applying, and that with recycling, etc. it's a growth industry. Also it doesn't even require a high school diploma.

I'm not saying that these jobs are all over or that Pgh sanitiation companies pay as much as NYC, but the reality is that it's still possible to make decent money without being in tech.

Quitting my career in Finance and becoming a sanitation worker. BRB.

Really though, that is impressive. I always assumed sanitation workers earned minimum wage.

They do backbreaking labor in freezing weather at the crack of dawn. I'd say they're fairly compensated.

It certainly isn't easy money.

Good for them. Working the 7pm - 3 am shift, hot and cold weather, ice and snow, and the lifting would all be very difficult. Also not something you could be doing as you age and the body begins to go.

Keep in mind the cost of living differences.

What area of finance are you in, btw?

Here's another job that involves shift work, usually 7 -7, both night and day, lots of lifting, stress, etc. Pay for this job does not change much by experience, with the most experienced earning only a bit more than the least. People in this job generally don't have more than 20 years' experience. Mostly female. Generally HS diploma or GED needed to take training course.
Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Salary
$11.10/hr. median wage = ~$22K/year

I wasn't aware that sanitation workers worked nights. Ours always come during the day. I've never heard of trash being picked up in the middle of the night. Awfully noisy, I'd think.
