World’s Steepest Street Featured In New Audi Commercial « CBS Pittsburgh

The world’s steepest public street, which happens to be right here in Pittsburgh, is gaining even more notoriety thanks to a new commercial.

Canton Avenue in Beechview boasts a 37 degree gradient and caught the eye of Audi executives last November.
Recently, the automaker and Red Bull teamed up for a unique challenge featuring the Audi A4 Quattro.

“It took them 92 years to find it, I guess,” said Canton Avenue resident Joe Bonadio, who has lived there all his life.

According to Audi, “Four exceptional Red Bull athletes participated in the challenge. Among them Audi works driver and DTM champion Mattias Ekström, freestyle skier Bene Mayr, professional snowboarder Heikki Sorsa and downhill mountain biker Aaron Gwin.”

For the challenge, snow, gravel mud and sand were brought in to cover the road.

The athletes piled into the vehicle and Ekström drove them to the top before each took their own way back down to the bottom.

The commercial also features plenty of glorious shots of Pittsburgh and the athletes seemed to have enjoyed their time.

Neighbors who live there seem to like it, too.

“Right here they had a ramp, and over there they had a ramp, and they went over both of them it was something else,” Bonadio said.

If you can't afford an Audi, get a Volkswagen.

Only way to get AWD in a sedan is to buy an older 4-motion as VW doesn't offer an AWD Passat any longer. VW will offer an AWD wagon again.

Back in the day I had a VW bug that couldn't make it to the top of a Beechview hill in one go. I had to get another running start on a side street about halfway up.

While VW Beetle's were great in the snow due to their rear engine, it doesn't compare to AWD/4X4.
