The only option I can see for you to accept reality and keep the officers from leaving is to take care of them better. If not, like every profession, they will leave for greener pastures.

I bit ironic that the same people who routinely rail on against the city police in any other thread involving police actions are talking them up in this thread...

I believe that what gladhands meant was that the suburbs drain the resources of the city by extracting trained officers, and then burbanites proceed to deliver lectures about the city's lack of appreciation for its police force.

And again, losing 1.7% of officers to the burbs doesn't seem as significant as you (and KDKA) are making it out to be. Where are the "droves" mentioned in the headline? Mountains out of molehills, actually... mere sensationalism.

My thoughts exactly. You'd think they'd be escorting them out of the city.

Just because people have criticism for the actions of some police, it doesn't mean that these critics want to see cops undercompensated. I think it's ironic to see all the "fiscal conservatives" advocate for paying public servants more than they are already getting. I guess the authoritarian nature of the police is appealing for some...

The city needs to adjust the police pay structure so that the average officer earns more and the top 50 city salaries aren't dominated by almost purely by tenured police officers. This is the same problem with teachers.

Doubtful the burbs are luring them away. When one becomes unhappy with their place of employment they look elsewhere.

As Ukyank mentioned, the same ones who constantly complain about the behavior of the city police are the ones complaining they're leaving.

Again, depends on how much $$$ it costs to train and retrain.

I'm not taking up for them. I know the Pgh police have had a serious problem with policing their own bad cops. The Nate Harper scandal, the beating of that high school kid in Homewood, other numerous shady goings on. I am hoping this new chief gets a handle on the corruption and abuse of power. The suspension of that cop beating up the drunk kid at one of the ball fields was a breath of fresh air. Aside from Harper, which they HAD to make an example of to save their butts, I can't remember a cop being disciplined for much in recent history.

For those that want them to stay, more $$$ is always a factor in keeping an employee, especially when others are getting more.

1.7% is 21 officers a year, sounds sort of significant.

This is just those who stay in policing, there are retirees and quits to add to that.

Maybe there isn't anything that can be done, but solutions should at least be considered.
