I definitely know of racial undercurrents being associated with the terms "thug" and "ghetto", but I agree this is the first place I've found the word "sketchy" to cause similar disdain. I would consider Carrick to be sketchy, and I'm pretty sure it's majority-white.

I agree with Mt. Washington. I would also put Point Breeze and definitely Friendship in there.

I've also never heard the word sketchy used with any racial connotations - there are other phrases that people would use if they wanted to introduce a racial flavor into the mix, sketchy is not racially based.

Agreed. This is the first place I've heard of most all of these alleged/assumed racial allegations.

A simple Google search for sketchy + racist will show you that I'm not making it up. Perfectly well-meaning people can internalize racist tropes. There's no need to get defensive, just be cognizant.

A Google search of "sketchy racist" brings up a talked about app from 6 months-almost 2 years ago with all but nothing coming from it.

No need to defend. I'm cognizant when there's something to be cognizant about...and I'm cognizant of the race card constantly be played for no reason other than having an issue with most everything that's done or said.

Google any word in the English language + racist & I'm sure you'll get hits; that doesn't mean the term actually has any racial connotations.

I thought that also but a search of "sketchy racist" proved all but otherwise.

"Thug" - it means what it does. Whoever decided that was a racial slur was probably one of those apologists that shriek at the value of posting a video of a mob of teens fighting like hell in the streets of our downtown. (If they were non-blacks, the small protest at the beginning of this thread would be much different.)

If the shoe fits, wear it, regardless of color. "Thug" is a perfectly abbreviated way of referring to a hoodlum. Wait, "hoodlum" is still OK, isn't it? It wasn't adopted to refer to the Brentwood Nepalese teens now, has it???

Out of curiosity what is an acceptable way to describe Homewood? If sketchy isn't allowed. I assume ghetto isn't allowed either.
