Johnstown is much more isolated than New Castle. As a result, it's more self contained. I prefer Altoona over both.

not a big fan of altoonas location, i liked both of these towns due to the quick hour drive to pittsburgh

I would steer you clear of New Castle - but if you can tolerate relatively bad areas, and I'm guessing you are younger than middle age, try New Castle for its better proximity to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, I-79, etc. It is not a far drive from Ohio, where you may tend to find cheaper things like furniture or whatever.

chances are, not very far from one or two centers of dodgery in New Castle, its small townish and nice.

Why just those two towns?
Did you have a job in the area? I would think you want an easy commute to work, and your choices are far apart.
